Our Counseling Approach

Compassionate, biblical, Christ-centered Care

Our threefold approach is anchored in what we believe about

1) the presence of Christ,
2) the words of Christ, and
3) the character of Christ.

Our Beliefs

Abstract Background

1

Compassionate

We at Solus Counseling believe that the good news of the gospel calls us to walk with others in compassion.

We also believe that people are complex. We are affected by our own bodies, other people, culture, work, spiritual life, and much more. Christian counselors who rely on the Bible are not the only ones who seek to understand and help others. There are many other helpful, compassionate voices out there that we want to learn from, and we want to put it all through the filter of Truth.

We believe that the gospel communicates the deeply compassionate presence of God, and that Christian counselors must offer such a presence to their counselees.

2

Biblical

We at Solus Counseling affirm the unique sufficiency of Scripture, and that it yields faithful, fresh, and timely wisdom for the troubles of life.

We believe this because we also believe that Scripture comes from God, and the Holy Spirit who authored it for our flourishing.

We also believe that Scripture, the more we look at it, is about counseling: diagnostic categories, causal explanations of behavior and emotion, interpretation of external sufferings and influences, definitions of workable solutions, the character of the counselor, goals for the counseling process, etc. These are all matters to which Scripture speaks directly, clearly, and lovingly. They are, in a sense, our "counselors." (Ps. 119:24)

3

Christ-centered

Our name Solus Counseling is taken from the Latin phrase “Solus Christus,” which means, Christ Alone. We believe that Christ alone is truly sufficient to be our hope and help.

We believe that Christ sees us, understands us, loves us and helps us in our personal and interpersonal struggles. We believe his nearness to us is our greatest good.

We also believe that Christ-likeness is the best definition of wellness and human flourishing. To conform to the character of Christ is, therefore, our highest aim.

We also understand that this journey can follow a path but not a script. There is no formula or easily predictable outcomes in counseling. We therefore want to approach each person with Christlike humility and constant reliance on him.
